Old Soul Cabinetry: Crafting with purpose
Founded by Kyle Gorski in 2023, Old Soul Cabinetry started with a passion for woodworking that dates back to when he was just 11 years old, building a quarter-pipe for skateboarding.
Over the years, he has crafted everything from furniture and cabinetry to jewelry boxes, wooden bowls, and even tiny knickknacks like whistles and coasters. "I'm sometimes asked how many things I've made, and I honestly - I have no idea. Frankly, I’d never thought to keep track, I just loved making things. Even to this day I still make all kinds of things in my spare time. I’ve always been drawn to the shimmer of figured wood grain—it can be made to look holographic/3D when one knows what they’re doing. I'll sometimes spot a random board that I know will contain a very unique grain pattern under the rough surface, and turn it into wall art. Seriously - I will hang it on my wall when finished. It's beautiful.”
Kyle mentions a deeper cause for his woodworking pursuit, “In 2019 a major change took place in my life when I was born-again into Christianity, after living nearly half my life with my back turned to God. I began to transform as a person. Woodworking became more than just a hobby. People began requesting more pieces from me and I found more joy than ever in the craft. In 2021 I decided to open a woodworking business, aiming to start out slow and see where it went. After reading Purpose Driven Life with my oldest daughter, Maddy, I felt a calling and decided to go all-in with it. After all, Jesus Christ himself was a woodworker, so it was like a “Here’s your sign” kind of moment.
It has been an interesting journey for sure. Certainly not one without its ups and downs, but I have never felt this same sense of purpose in my work before. I find joy in the look on a clients face as we deliver exactly what they had envisioned. Although, maybe more importantly, we’re taking ordinary, renewable resources that God has plentifully provided, and transforming them into something beautiful, functional, and with significantly more longevity than what a lot of other businesses produce. We’re making the things that future generations will call antiques someday.”
Why the Name “Old Soul Cabinetry”?
"Because every project we tackle signifies the birth of something that will last a very long time. Wood sort of inherently has old soul, and you don’t see a lot of things made from solid wood anymore. The market is inundated with particleboard - and it can be very expensive, which I found disappointing. It literally crumbles as it ages, or even if it's being moved across the room. There is so much that can be done with solid wood, and it can last for centuries when properly maintained. That’s why I started building my own furniture initially, and howe custom cabinetry and millwork became my sweet spot: I wanted to bring out the natural God-given beauty and strength of hardwood and turn it into something functional that everyone can see and enjoy. Your kitchen cabinets will probably be the first thing people notice when they enter your home. We can make that first impression incredible. Plus we can make matching furniture to go with it. I think there’s value in that.”
